Use the evidence the puzzle gives you
A crossword gives clue wording and crossing letters. Kriss Kross gives a word bank and slot lengths. Pieceword adds 3×3 block shapes, while a Codeword repeats the same numbered letter across the grid.
The most useful first move is usually the clue or pattern with the fewest possible answers. One confident placement can make several other choices easier.
Let crossings do the hard work
Do not treat each word as isolated. A confirmed crossing letter can turn a vague answer into an obvious one, and a block with a black-square pattern can sharply limit its Pieceword position.
In Codeword, use a tentative mapping only after checking every occurrence of the number. A good mapping should improve several word shapes, not just one.
Avoid locking in a weak answer
If an answer fits the length but does not fit the clue or crossings, leave it open. Word puzzles reward flexible reasoning more than fast filling.
Return to difficult clues once the board has supplied more letters. The new pattern often provides the missing direction.
